    Welcome to First Grade!

    Dear Parents,

Every month I will be sending home a newsletter to let you know about what we are learning, important events at our school, and any other special information.

    What we are learning

This year we have made many changes to our ELA program and our math program.  In ELA we will be introducing the Daily Five, Guided Reading, CAFE, and Writer's Workshop to the children.  In math, we are using the My Math series that focuses on the common core.  The students will participate in a daily math "spiral" that will provide a review of previously learned concepts.  They will also participate in daily math centers.  We are very excited about these new programs.

    Supplies

This is just a reminder in case your child is missing any of the necessary supplies.  Please make sure your child has pencils (they will probably need to be replaced every 10 weeks), 1 large eraser, 1-2 boxes of tissues, 1 box of crayons (they will probably need to replaced at least one time during the school year), 1 bottle of Elmer's glue, 1 art smock (oversized t-shirt), 1 small pencil box, and 1 pair of scissors.  We are also always in need of Ziploc bags and Clorox wipes.  If at any time, you could send these items in, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    Show and Tell/Share Time

We will be starting share time during the first full week of school.  This is a time when the children can share something about themselves, such as a special event coming up, or anything else that is of interest to them.   On Fridays the children may bring in a small toy to share, if they woule like.

    Book Orders

Each month I will be sending home a book order form.  If you would like to order a book, please fill out the form and make a check out to Scholastic Book Club.  Please do not send cash.  Please put the form and check in an envelope with your child's name on it.  Please put the envelope in your child's folder.

    Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer in our classroom please let me know.

    Friday Movie Day

At the end of each week, provided it has been a week of good behavior and hard work, the students will be able to watch a movie.  The movies are provided by the Newfane School District.  The children may bring in a healthy snack to eat during the movie.  I will let the children know on Thursday if we will be watching a movie.

    Reminder

Please check your child's folder every day.  Also, make sure your child brings his or her folder to school every day.  This is very important to maintain school/home communication.  Thanks!
